November 2012

David has been writing songs for a new album, and now you have a chance to help make that album happen!  Check out the Rhodes page on PledgeMusic - if you contribute today, you'll be able to download a live recording of one of the new songs now, before it has even been near a studio. All you have to do is click on the cool looking record (remember records?)

March 2012

David will be touring with Ged Lynch and Charlie Jones in Austria in April. He's working on new tunes and the shows should be good fun.

For ticket information:

25 April Dornbirn > Conrad Sohm
26 April Vienna > Porgy & Bess
27 April Wels > SoundTheatre

As we told you last time, David was invited to take part Luc Van Acker's one-time-only performance of his 1984 album "The Ship" which was being honored by Ancienne Belguique. By all accounts, it was a wonderful evening. You can see for yourself, because the entire concert is available for viewing here.

To stay in the loop, don't forget to check out David's Facebook page.

January 2012

Happy New Year!

David has some interesting things coming up in the new year.

In addition to writing for a new album, David has been working with Richard Evans on the soundtrack for a project celebrating Melaka's independence.

Outside the studio, David has been invited to take part in what promises to be a one-of-a-kind evening in February. Belgian musician Luc Van Acker is being honored on February 12, 2012 by Ancienne Belguique and will be performing his 1984 album "The Ship" in full. As one of the original musicians on the album, David has been invited and will be performing. For tickets and more information about the project, check out their website.

And don't forget to check out David's Facebook page.

October 2011

"What has David been up to lately?"

That's the question we found in our inbox this week. The answer is, quite a bit!

As we mentioned on this site previously, David played some shows with the artist Graham Dean this summer. The shows featured Graham's paintings projected on the walls and on screens, as he painted and as David played. Despite David's slightly-broken ankle, both men worked well off of each other and created some wonderful moments.

Serious concentration during the show in Heerlen...

Setting up pre-show in Maastricht.

(Photos from Cultura Nova and Graham Dean's Facebook folders.)

Pictures are great, but what you really want is to hear it, right? Alrighty then! Have a taste of the Aachen show, courtesy of You Tube:

As if that wasn't enough, there was a mini-tour of Sardinia with the David Rhodes Trio earlier this summer, including a couple of brand new songs. Because we don't have video of those songs yet, we'd like to share with you some footage from April, in Milan, where the DRT played a great, funky version of a slightly older "new" song, "Waggle Dance". Thanks to Intruder for the great video!

And for those of you asking what's next - we're hearing hints that a new album might be starting "soonish". As always, when we know, we'll let you know!

To keep up to date, keep an eye on David's Facebook page.

Have a great month!

August 2011

Hi there! Right now, David is doing a trio of shows with Ged Lynch and Charlie Jones. The first show was at a festival in Caligiari on July 30. There are two more shows in Sardinia:

August 4th
Nuoro, Piazza Satta

August 9th
Villanova Tulo

As we told you last month, David will be playing some intriguing shows with the artist Graham Dean, as part of the Cultural Nova and Maastricht VIA 2018 projects. Graham will be painting in watercolors, with the painting projected on a wall as he works. David will be playing simultaneously. With both men reacting to what the other is doing, it looks and sounds like it will be a very stimulating evening of entertainment and art. For more information, click here.

To keep up to date, keep an eye on David's Facebook page.

Have a great month!

July 2011

Hi there! David did a couple of surprise slots opening for Cyndi Lauper last week in Bristol and Brighton. They were last-minute shows, but word is that David jumped in and did a great job!

As part of the Cultural Nova and Maastricht VIA 2018 projects, David has some interesting shows coming up at the end of August with the painter Graham Dean. Graham will be working in watercolors, with the painting projected on a wall as he works. David will be playing simultaneously. With both men reacting to what the other is doing, it looks and sounds like it will be a very stimulating evening of entertainment and art. For more information, click here.

May 2011

Hi there! We have a treat for you this month - awhile back, David, Ged and Richard taped an appearance on Manu Katche's French television show, One Shot Not. Most of the text is in French, but the backstage candid video and performance video are both in English. There are great performances of Reality Slips and Just Two People.

David now has a Facebook page. His most current tour dates will be posted there and he occasionally blogs, as well as putting up a picture or two. Check it out!

And please join us in wishing Mr. Rhodes a happy birthday on May 2. Happy birthday David!

April 2011

Hi there! Sorry we've been away so long. Sending the monthly updates by email isn't quite the same thing as putting them here, but sometimes it's the best we can manage. Sorry about that - and if you're not on the mailing list, please feel free to join up
!

Great news for those of you in Italy - David will be doing a short run of shows there this month. The David Rhodes Trio will be playing in Genoa, Rome, Milan and Parma. The April 10 show in Genoa is ProgFest, and will also feature Tony Levin with the Stick Men - definitely a show worth going to! For more information, check out David Rhodes on MySpace.

And of course, Bittersweet is still available on iTunes and Amazon.com - if you don't have it by now, the fault is entirely your own.

We'll do our best to keep the updates more regular in the future. Have a great month!

October 2010

David has been working on a couple of projects recently. He'll be re-teaming with Richard Evans, starting a soundtrack for a documentary this week.

He also tells us that he has been writing on some new songs in his spare time.

We found a collection of recent articles about David, conveniently gathered on a single page.

Don't forget - you can get Bittersweet on
iTunes!

September 2010

David finished opening for the Cyndi Lauper tour in the United States at the end of August. He got some great reviews and feedback. In addition, there have been a bunch of interviews and articles about Bittersweet. Here is a sampling of recent articles and interviews:

Performer Magazine
USA Today
Music Industry News Network
Musical America
All About Jazz
Examiner.com

Some of the articles came out before the Lauper tour, but they have great interviews.
Some other exciting news - Bittersweet is now available on

Second, and even bigger news for those of us not in Europe - “Bittersweet” will be released (as an actual CD) by
C.A.R.E. Music Group and as a sub-release by BMG in Germany. We’ve been told the release date will be May 7 - and we’ve got a peek at the cover image for you:

Third, and last for now, David will be opening for Cyndi Lauper on her U.S. tour this summer! David tells us he’ll be playing on the June and August dates. Here’s the schedule from Ms. Lauper’s site website.

Our friends at Deustcher Genesis Fanclub have a page about the tour), as well as a great review of Bittersweet written by Helmut Janusch. We're betting that Helmut may get to a show or two, so keep an eye on the site for a gig review!

We will do our best to keep you up to date as things come together. We hope to have more solid information on where to buy Bittersweet within the week - we’ll be sure to let you know!

Happy Spring!

February 1, 2010

And the news keeps coming! There are now solid dates for the Bittersweet Tour in Germany this May. You can find the schedule and links to buy tickets on David's MySpace page!

We're waiting on U.S. East Coast dates and David advises us that the French dates are still up in the air as well.

Stay tuned...

January 1, 2010

Happy New Year!

As many of you may know, David has had a couple of solo outings recently, and from all accounts they were great! He has another scheduled on January 21 at The Vic in Swindon, with Nichole Fermie and The Black Swan Effect. Stay tuned to his new MySpace page for up to the minute details on that show. We're told that they may be posting some new video clips from his recent show, so be on the lookout for that!

Things may be heating up and David will have more shows in the very near future!!

The plans aren't complete, but we've been told that it's "probable" that David will be playing a small tour on the East Coast of the United States this April, to be followed by shows in Germany in early May. There are also tentative plans for shows outside Paris, but nothing definite yet.

Fingers crossed, this is looking like an exciting start to the year!

As always, we'll keep you informed of developments as quickly as we can.

December 1, 2009

David has been pursuing licensing for Bittersweet and hopes to have arrangements made soon.

To help pass the time waiting, check out David's new MySpace page, which features four songs from Bittersweet, as well as a video clip from his recent solo performance at WOMAD this past summer.

In addition, plans are in the works for a December 10 show at The Porter in Bath. Hopefully, more live performances will follow!

As always, we'll do our best to keep you updated.

All wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

November 1, 2009

After a successful run, Bowers and Wilkins has taken down David's new solo album, "Bittersweet". Now that the rights to the music have reverted back to him, David is working on arrangements to license the music for sale

In addition, David may be doing some performances to promote the album. Everything is up in the air at the moment, but as soon as schedules are set, we'll pass the information along to you immediately.

September 1, 2009

As you may know, David's new solo album, Bittersweet, was released on the Bowers and Wilkins Music Club site and is now available for download.

David was interviewed before the album release, and gave a lot of background about the album and the players involved. Courtesy of Real World, you can see the video here:

August 1, 2009

The Bittersweet release is drawing closer. David spent time with the B&W writer this past week, being interviewed to provide background information for their website. The album is set for release the last week of August, so keep an eye on the Bowers and Wilkins Music Club site for updates. And we'll do our best to let you know as soon as the music is available.

As you may know, Peter Gabriel played (with his band) at WOMAD this year, in support of Witness. What you may not know is that David played a short solo set the next night on one of the smaller WOMAD stages. From all accounts, it went well and it's likely that David will be playing some solo shows in the near future, in support of the album.

As always, we'll pass information on as soon as we have it - stay tuned!

July 11, 2009

David Ferguson, 1953-2009

July 1, 2009

Bittersweet, David's solo album, is now set for release through the Bowers and Wilkins Music Club at the end of August. After a few date adjustments, the hope is that this is the final and correct release date.

David is toying with the idea of playing out in support of the album; he may be doing some solo performances of the new material. Right now, he's having some technical difficulties - if he gets those resolved, we may have the chance to see him out and about on his own.

Laurence Revey is scheduled to play at a small music festival next month in Switzerland and David is hoping to be able to join her for that performance.

In addition, David continues to work with Richard Evans (as The Footnote), scoring a new National Geographic series called "Great White". The series will consist of ten hours of programming, so quite a lot of music is needed; it looks as if they'll be at work on it for the next while.

And for those of you who have expressed concern, David's bees seem to be doing quite well. He has a number of colonies at work and has suffered only minor injuries due to a few "grumpy bees".

June 1, 2009

David is just back from Rome, having spent a couple of weeks in Italy performing at InDeepAnDance with Richard Evans and Ged Lynch, among others. He reports that he had a great time, although the shows were a bit different from the norm - standing two feet from the audience took some getting used to. Short clips from the performances can be found on YouTube. Everyone is looking forward to Bittersweet, which has unfortunately been pushed back to mid-August by the Bowers and Wilkins Music Club. We don't yet have more precise information, but we will let you know as soon as we do. In addition, David will be working with Richard on soundtrack music for a new National Geographic series called "Great White" about - you guessed it - sharks. More info as we get it.

May 1, 2009

David tells us he has had a busy month and has another one ahead. For those of you who enquired, DR did spend about a week recording with David Ferguson last month. What will become of the music is unclear as this point. Bittersweet is mastered and will be released through the Bowers and Wilkins Music Club as their selection for the month of July. InDeepAnDance is a unique music and visual arts event, conceptualized by Vittorio Cosma, Masbedo and Aldo Nove. Last year, David wrote a couple of songs for the event, this year he'll be performing at some shows in Italy, together with Richard Evans and Ged Lynch, among many others. David is also looking forward to doing some shows with Laurence Revey at some point in the summer, but as yet nothing is confirmed. And for those who enquired about DR's latest garden activities, we're told that the bees will be moving in tomorrow! For more information, keep checking David Rhodes Archive for updates.

April 1, 2009

David's returning home, having just completed Peter Gabriel's short South American tour. Soundboard recordings of the shows are available through TheMusic.com.

You can see great pictures from the tour on Tony Levin's tour page. He's added films now! Definitely worth checking out.

Things are getting busy - David tells us that he'll be going into the studio this month with an old friend. He may also be doing some shows supporting another vocalist. As always, we'll try to get more details and pass them along as soon as we can.

March 1, 2009

David tells us that Tchad Blake has completed mixing "Bittersweet" and the music is now being mastered. No release date has been set.

David is currently in rehearsals for Peter Gabriel's South American tour, starting later this month. Check out Tony Levin's new tour page for pictures and details.

February 1, 2009

David reports that he's completed the studio work on "Bittersweet", Stephen Barber has written and recorded some beautiful string arrangments and Tchad Blake is currently working on mixing the songs. David is pleased with the results; he calls the music "very exciting." Stay tuned, and we'll be sure to let you in on release dates and other pertinent information as we get it.

In other news, David will soon start rehearsals for a small tour with Peter Gabriel. At present, it looks as if they'll he performing in Mexico and South America.

January 1, 2009

Happy New Year!

We have some very exciting news. This month, David will go into the studio to record a solo album. He's written a great bunch of songs and wrangled a group of excellent musicians to help him out, including Richard Evans, Ged Lynch, Dean Brodrick and Charlie Jones.

The album, called Bittersweet, will initially be released for download through the Bower and Wilkins Music Club. No timetable is set as of yet, but studio work begins next week. We'll be sure to keep you advised as we get new information.

In other news, David worked on Daniel Mimra's new album, which was released last month. You can hear a few of the songs on his site.

December 1, 2008

Nothing new to report (*yet*), but we're happy to have a treat for you this month. For those of you who never had the chance to see/hear "Sea Monsters", we have two pieces from the soundtrack for you this month. The music was recorded in a specific manner to take advantage of the IMAX sound systems, but you can certainly hear how special it is, even in stereo.

To read about the recording process and hear some of the soundtrack, please go here. If you're interested about the recording process, enjoy the information David provided. If you just can't wait to hear the music, scroll to the end of the interview and you'll find the links. Enjoy!

All wishes for a wonderful holiday season from us at dr.org!

November 1, 2008

Another quiet month for David. Still some irons in the fire, and some projects that should heat up in the New Year.

For those of you have been asking for a long-overdue update on some of the information on the FAQ page, here's a small insight into how David is spending his spare time between projects, straight from the man himself:

As for how I'm spending my time, at the moment I read very slowly, The Cider House Rules [by John Irving - ed.], and a couple of books on beekeeping. If I have some spare money in the spring I may sort out a hive. Bees, would help increase the apple harvest.
I should be pressing the last of the apples for juice, over the weekend. The cider is still fermenting.
I was pointed in the direction of a band call EST. Swedish, I think. The odd bits I've heard sound remarkable. Sadly the main guy, died in a diving accident earlier this year.

There you go, straight from the man himself. Among his many other skills, perhaps he'll soon add the term "apiarist" to his always-growing resume.

September 15, 2008

Blancmange will be releasing newly remastered CDs of Happy Families, Mange Tout and Believe You Me this month. August 1, 2008

InDeepAnDance is an event created by four Italian artists: a musician, a poet, and two film directors (Vittorio Cosma, Aldo Nove and the duo Masbedo). Described as a multimedia opera, its a combination of film and music, meant to be a blend of challenging ideas and groove music, as a complement to each other. There are thirteen movements of music and images, presented on four screens in a large structure, with the audience centered between the screens.

Richard Evans and David collaborated with Vittorio Cosma, writing two sections, hurrying/speed and I am, which David describes as melodic, powerful and emotional. David and Richard contributed vocals on these sections and David played on a couple of other sections. The show will run for four nights in Milan next month. There will be a guest soloist each night, who will play along with the tracks on one or two pieces. If the show works well, it may travel to other cities.

For a clearer idea of what the event will encompass, check out the YouTube clip below:

For even more information (provided that you speak Italian), please visit Lombardi Cultura and for tickets, go to TicketOne.it.

July 1, 2008

Not a whole lot of news at the moment. David appears on 'Big Blue Ball', the latest Real World Records release, as well as on "Down To Earth", Peter Gabriel's contribution to the 'Wall-E' soundtrack.

'Sea Monsters' is now available on DVD in the United States and Canada; you can order from National Geographic or Amazon.com.

We're thrilled (and a bit relieved) to bring you a blast from the past this month. Those of you familiar with Random Hold may remember that a very favorable newspaper write up helped pique Polydor's interest and RH's subsequent signing. That article appeared in Melody Maker in December of 1978, and you can read it in its entirety here. (Apologies in advance for the poor quality of the picture scans, there's only so much to be done with 30 year old newsprint!)

June 1, 2008

We had hoped to have a surprise for you last month, but it hasn't quite come together yet. We're still working on getting things to fall into line, and as soon as we can, we'll get word to you.

In the meantime, we do have a couple of items of interest this month.

The Discovery Channel will be airing Atlas: India Revealed in the United States this month. The Footnote (David, together with Richard Evans) wrote the musical score for the India chapter, as well as the South Africa episode (which is not yet on the television schedule).

"Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure" will be available for sale on DVD (in the U.S. and Canada only) starting June 10, 2008. No word on DVD release in Europe or Australia, nor any sign of the soundtrack CD as yet, but you can order the DVD here.

May 1, 2008

Okay, so we got a little carried away with the spirit of April Fools Day. Our apologies for any confusion we may have caused. As far as we know, there was no gathering of David Rhodes(es) at Real World (although we have compiled a list through the years of many other folks with the same name). At last count, we had well over 20 of them.

The results for our March contest are in! Our five winners are Jim DiCarli, Kerstin Baramsky, Robert Rakoczy, Dave Clark and Susanne Vogel. Congratulations, and your autographed cards will be on their way to you this week.

David has been working with Peter Gabriel on on a bit of the music meant for the new PIXAR film, called WALL-E. Not sure how much will end up in the movie, but it should be on the soundtrack. More about the film can be found here.

There's something else in the wind that isn't quite ready, but look for another ATDR update in the next week or two with what we hope will be a nice surprise.

April 1, 2008

March was a very eventful month for DR. David Rhodes, the cellist and composer, David Rhodes, the American guitarist, and David Rhodes, the lutist, happened to be traveling through Wiltshire with David Rhodes, the duck decoy designer. Unfortunately, they got hung up by a flat tyre on their tour bus. DR happened along at just the right time and after helping them get their coach sorted, invited them to Real World for an impromptu jam session. An incredibly busy (and caffeine-filled) 24 hours later, the Davids had written and recorded 10 brand new songs and carved one duck decoy inspired by the infamous Real World swan. The particulars are still being ironed out, but keep your eyes out for the release of the new Rhodes + Rhodes + Rhodes + Rhodes CD, entitled David, coming soon to a record shop near you!

Our sources say that the album cover might look something like this:

March 1, 2008

Our apologies for missing last month's update. We were hoping to have some news, and then time just slipped away. We'll do our best not to repeat our quiet hiatus.

On other fronts, March marks the fourth anniversary of David Rhodes Archive (for those of you wanting to send presents, linen is the traditional fourth anniversary gift).

To celebrate, we're launching a new contest! This one is far easier than the last. All you have to do is send us an email here. Include your name, mailing address and, if you care to, any ideas you have about other stuff you would like to see on the site.

Five winners, chosen at random from all entries, will win an David Rhodes Archive postcard, autographed by the man himself! Entries are due by March 15 at midnight (GMT).

Good luck!

January 1, 2008

Things have been relatively quiet this past month. Word is that National Geographic will be releasing the "Sea Monsters" soundtrack composed by David with Richard Evans. No release date has been set - as soon as we have information, we'll pass it along. All wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!

December 1, 2007

As we reported last month, David is in Johannesburg to perform with PG for this year's 46664 World Aids Day concert. Other artists appearing include Annie Lennox, Ludacris, Corinne Bailey Rae and the Goo Goo Dolls.

Dickie Chappell has updated his Tour Diary with great information about the rehearsals in the Big Room (pictured below) and the show.

November 1, 2007

Peter Gabriel (and his full band) will be performing at the World AIDS Day concert sponsored by Nelson Mandela's 46664 Foundation. The concert will be in Johannesburg on December 1, and will also feature Annie Lennox, Ludacris, Corinne Bailey Rae and the Goo Goo Dolls.

From the 46664 site:

46664 (we say four, double six, six four) was Nelson Mandela's prison number when he was imprisoned on Robben Island, off Cape Town in South Africa. He was jailed in 1964 for 27 years for leading the liberation movement against apartheid and for his impassioned stance on the rights of everyone to live in freedom. He was prisoner number 466, imprisoned in 1964. The Robben Island prisoners were never referred to by their names, but rather by their numbers and year of imprisonment - hence 46664 was Nelson Mandela's number.

This was very much the strategy of the apartheid regime, to reduce those people fighting for the right to freedom to nameless numbers.

It was for precisely this reason that Mr. Mandela decided to use this powerful, symbolic number in the fight against HIV AIDS. Through this simple, poignant means he has demonstrated and communicated to the world that people must never be reduced to simple numbers - we are human beings, all equal, and those infected and living with HIV AIDS have the same right to live and to be treated as equals.

This is how the number 46664 became the icon for promoting Nelson Mandela's global HIV AIDS awareness campaign.

SeaMonsters

National Geographic's new film, "Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure", opens in the U.S. on October 5 and in Europe and Australia on October 20. "The Footnote" (David Rhodes and Richard Evans) devised new recording methods to take advantage of the IMAX format.

From National Geographic's website:

The film combines the powerful and experiential nature of the giant screen with strong science and educational materials which highlight the complexity and fragility of life in Earths oceans, and a powerful multi-media launch plan. Merging ultra-high-resolution 3D graphics with National Geographics trademark authenticity, compelling imagery and powerful storytelling, SEA MONSTERS is an unforgettable prehistoric adventure.

As promised, we have an extensive interview with David about his work on this unique project.

September 1, 2007

Things have been relatively quiet this month. With all of his work completed on "Sea Monsters", David took some time off to relax.

Next month we look forward to bringing you a new Q&A dealing with the challenges of scoring an IMAX film.

August 1, 2007

After a whirlwind summer tour, David has a relatively quiet month planned for August, with just a single show scheduled on August 11.

During the short break before the WOMAD show, David rushed back into the studio with Richard Evans to work on the "Sea Monsters" theme song. Peter Gabriel collaborated in writing the theme, and Angie Pollack lent her voice (together with Peter's) to the tune. As of this writing, the film is scheduled for release in the United States on October 5, 2007, and will play in both IMAX and standard theatres.

July 1, 2007

"The Peter Gabriel Warm Up Tour Summer 2007" seems to have hit its stride. They have had successful shows throughout Germany and parts of the U.K. and, as of this writing, they're preparing to swing through Italy. For the most current tour information, as well as Richard Chappell's Tour Diaries, keep checking the Tour Info page on Peter Gabriel's site.

For a slightly different view of the tour, be sure to stop by Tony Levin's site.

The shows have gotten great receptions so far. The show in Hyde Park seems to have been a high point, and you can read a wonderful review by Mic Smith here.

For the gearheads amongst you who have been begging for information on the toys that David's using onstage this time around, we have a few treats for you. Uncle Tony was kind enough to provide us with a picture of David's pedal array:

Unfortunately, your humble webmistress knows nothing about this tech stuff, but David was kind enough to provide the following explanation of what we're looking at (and listening to):

Tuner
Volume pedal
Mesa Boogie V-Twin
Matchless pre-amp
Roger Mayer Octavia
Boss Octave
Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe
Into a TC 2290 delay unit, which goes to two Rivera Knucklehead amps, into a Rivera stereo 4 x 12.

David tells us "Its the simplest rig on stage."

And for those of you who have been requesting a list of the "lovely ladies" David has with him this time out, they are:
James Trussart Tele
James Trussart Les Paul
Frudua (silver)
Gibson Les Paul Gold Top
Steinberger 12 string

David used all of these guitars at one time or another on the Growing Up Tour, and you can find more information about them on our Guitar Page.

June 1, 2007

In the past couple of weeks, David and Richard have completed all three soundtrack projects, including a recording session with an orchestra in Budapest to put the finishing touches on "Sea Monsters".

Rehearsals for "The Peter Gabriel Warm Up Tour Summer 2007" began in earnest on May 21, and now that Tony has joined them, the band is complete. You can check out Richard Chappell's Tour Diary for daily updates on the progress of the tour preparations and some very nice pictures of the goings on, such as these:

As of this writing, the tour comprises over 20 shows, including a rare engagement at 'The Eden Project,' where PG played during the Live 8 concerts.

Keep checking the Live page on Peter Gabriel's site for the most current information.

May 1, 2007

As if getting ready for rehearsals and a quick summer tour wasn't enough to keep David occupied, he's currently hard at work with Richard Evans, finishing up soundtracks for two new "Atlas: Revealed" offerings for The Discovery Channel and "Sea Monsters" for National Geographic. David tells us that Richard and the orchestrator have come up with a "wild plan" to record some of the "Sea Monsters" orchestrations in a way that has never been done before, in an effort to achieve the "weight and immersive qualities" required to properly orchestrate the underwater scenes.

March 1, 2007

The Footnote will start work on a new film soundtrack in March, an IMAX release for National Geographic, called "Sea Monsters". You can see the trailer and a short film on the website for the film, due out this Autumn.

In addition, check out the Discography page. Over the past couple of months, we have been able to add quite a few projects that previously succeeded in escaping our notice.

Unfortunately, David will not appear at the "Fstival Prsences lectroniques" as we reported previously.

February 1, 2007

On March 15, David will be appearing at "Fstival Prsences lectroniques", a four day music festival in Paris, presented by Institut National de L'audiovisuel and Radio France. David will be part of an experimental music group which will also include Hector Zazou, Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin, Katie Jane Garside and Nils Petter Molvr. If you speak French, you can find more information here and here.

David reports that he and Richard are still hard at work on the "Atlas" series for the Discovery Network. Most recently they have turned their attentions to "India Revealed". As soon as we have airdates for the new batch of programs, we'll be sure to pass them along.

January 1, 2007

Taking a slower pace due to the holiday season, David continues to work with Richard Evans on "Atlas: South Africa" for release sometime this year.
For those who may have missed our rare mid-month update, we're pleased to bring you a couple of the lovely tunes David wrote for "Atlas: Australia Revealed". You can hear them here.

Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year to all!

December 15, 2006

We're pleased to bring you a couple of the tunes David wrote for Atlas: Australia Revealed. You can hear them here.

Happy holidays!

December 1, 2006

As promised, dr.org HQ is now coming to you from the West Coast of the United States, and thanks to everyone for your well wishes.

David tells us that "The Footnote" is still hard at work on the soundtrack for "Atlas: South Africa" and it looks as if they'll begin work on "Atlas: India" at the beginning of 2007. The China and Australia editions are still showing on the Discovery Times channel - check the Atlas website for current listings.

In addition, keep an eye on eBay - there might still be a few good bits left. Keep in mind that anything listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo' is legitimate, and feel free to contact webmaster@davidrhodes.org if you have any doubts about a particular item.

October 24, 2006

The November update is slightly early this month, due to the relocation of dr.org HQ from the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast. No worries, though, we fully intend to be back on schedule for the December 1 update.

The "Atlas" series has premiered in the United States to great reviews, and can still be seen in reruns. The Discovery Channel has a fantastic website about the show, including video clips from each of the first four episodes and new material added after the shows have aired.

David has begun working with Richard Evans on the soundtrack for "Atlas: South Africa" and they may also write the music for "Atlas: India" some time early next year.

David tells us that his shed is feeling much less cluttered thanks to the wonderful response to his eBay auctions. He says he has a few good bits left, some of which may find their way to auction during November. Be sure to keep an eye out for items listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo'.

October 1, 2006

On October 1, 2006, the "Atlas" series will premiere in the United States on both the Discovery Channel and Discovery HD Theatre. David worked with Richard Evans to score the China episode (airing October 1) and the Australia episode (airing October 22). Discovery has a great website about the show, including video clips from each of the first four episodes.

In addition, David tells us that he and Richard are looking forward to beginning work on "Atlas: South Africa" next week.

David is still clearing out his shed. Keep an eye out for some very cool items on eBay in the near future, listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo'. Two Encore sets have already been auctioned, and it's likely that a few more items will appear in the near future.

September 1, 2006

On October 1, 2006, "China: Revealed," the first film in the Discovery Channel "Atlas" series, will premiere in the United States, complete with a soundtrack by "The Footnote," otherwise known as Richard Evans and David Rhodes. While he was working on the soundtrack earlier this year, David answered some questions for us about his experiences with the soundtrack process in general, and this program in particular, which you can read here.

For the collectors out there, David tells us that he's clearing out his shed once again. Keep an eye out for some very cool items on eBay in the near future, listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo'. There was a problem with a fraudulent listing not long ago, but rest assured that any listings from drstufftogo are genuine. As to what sort of items will be listed, we can't be too specific, but you're likely to see an Encore deluxe boxed set or three, as well as some one-of-a-kind items.

August 1, 2006

David and Richard, now working under the amusing name "The Footnote", completed the soundtrack for Atlas: Australia last week. It looks as if France has been delayed again, so The Footnote is taking a well-deserved break.

However, David will be doing some work on Loreena McKennit's new album - you may recall that he played on her release "Book of Secrets".

For your viewing pleasure this month, we have something a bit different. Many of you have questions about David's discography, especially many of the Japanese albums. We have a clip of Akiko Nano performing a song from her album "Ai Ga Nakucha Ne". If you look very closely, you can see Mr. Rhodes with the background players, but his guitar is clearly heard throughout the song. We hope you enjoy this rare chance to hear music that is rarely accessible to us here in the West! Click here

July 1, 2006

David tells us that he started work on Atlas: France this week. The series is tentatively scheduled to begin airing on Discovery HD in October. As soon as we have firmer air dates, we'll let you know!

This month, we have a new video for you - footage from a 1986 Talk Talk concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. David played on the Talk Talk album "The Colour of Spring" and performed with them on this tour, which resulted in their live album, "London 1986".

Click here to see and hear "Call In The Nightboys". Enjoy!

June 1, 2006

David and Richard are busy putting the finishing touches on the soundtrack for Atlas: Australia.

David can also be heard on Akira Inoue's latest album, "Criteria". If you understand Japanese, you can find a great deal of information on Akira's website. If your Japanese is a bit rusty, you could give AltaVista's Babel Fish a try, although the results are often more poetic than comprehensible. For those of you who like a good conundrum, check out this page, which might look familiar to those of us who have ventured into the Wiltshire countryside.

The disc is only available for sale in Japan, but you can order it online through Sony Japan. (Once again, we strongly encourage engaging the services of a skilled translator if at all possible.)

For your viewing and listening pleasure this month, with the help of our friends at YouTube, we're pleased to bring you some fantastic footage of "Red Rain" from the 1986 Amnesty Tour. You can click here to see and hear the song. The young man with the blonde ponytail at stage right might look familiar. Enjoy! (Thanks to YouTube user "25million" for sharing this clip with us.)

May 1, 2006

As of this writing, David is in Budapest, working with an orchestra on the Australia soundtrack. He tells us that the project is moving along very well and much more quickly than the last.

This month we have a very special treat in store. We're pleased to bring you "Breakthrough", a song from 'Head, Hands & Feet', the album David recorded with Akira Inoue. The album is very difficult to find, so we're especially happy to be able to share this tune with you. You can hear the song here. Enjoy!

April 1, 2006

From the Great Wall and pandas to the Great Barrier Reef and koalas. Yes, after months of anticipation, it looks as if David and Richard have finally completed work on "China". However, rather than moving on to "France" as we reported last month, they're working on "Australia", the third episode of the Atlas series. They still expect to score "France", the Aussies have simply moved ahead in the order.

We had such a great response to the video footage last month (and keep those notes coming in, we always love to hear from you!) that we have another clip this month. You can see video of Japan's performance of "Ghosts" from the same episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test we featured last month (March 4, 1982). All the players are a bit more visible, and David makes some very creative noises whilst seated at stage left. You can see the clip here. Enjoy!

March 1, 2006

David reports that he and Richard Evans are very excited to be completing the soundtrack to China this week. They'll be moving on to France almost immediately, and it looks likely that they will also do the music for "Australia", the third film in the series. David has answered a slew of questions for us about the process of scoring the film and writing the music, and you can look forward to seeing that information in a future update when "China" airs, which is now projected to be some time in September 2006.

We have an interesting bit of film for you this month. Thanks to the kind folks at You Tube (and the anonymous friend who tipped us off), you can see and hear a rare performance of the band Japan. We have a video of their performance of "Cantonese Boy" on The Old Grey Whistle Test, from March 4, 1982. If you look towards the right side of the screen, you'll see a gent wearing a white shirt and playing a red guitar - if you squint, you can make out our own Mr. Rhodes. Unfortunately, the picture is fuzzy, but the sound is clear and you can get an idea of the sort of music Japan played. You can see the clip here. Enjoy!

February 1, 2006

As of this writing, David is once again hard at work on the soundtrack to China, the first program in the Atlas series for The Discovery Channel HD. David tells us that the film has been significantly re-edited, and he and Richard Evans are creating more music to suit the new footage. They have high hopes of completing it this month and will most likely be moving on to France, the next chapter in the Atlas series.

As promised last month, we have finally completed the redesign of the photo gallery! We now have over 60 photos, gathered from old magazine articles and personal photos, screenshots from DVDs and videos, books and concert photos. The pictures have been taken by folks such as Larry Fast, Tony Levin and many fans throughout the years, all of whom have graciously given their permission to use their images on this site. A grateful Thank you! to all of them for helping us expand our offerings and present a more thorough representation of David through the years.

You can see the new gallery by clicking here or using the 'Photos' link from any page on the site. Dont forget you can click on any of the thumbnail images to enlarge them and get a better look. Enjoy!

For those of you who may not have seen or heard about it, Peter Gabriel has posted a couple of previously unavailable songs for download, to benefit the earthquake relief efforts in Pakistan. These are songs Peter performed with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and all profits (except the credit card fees) will go to this excellent cause. As an added bonus, the songs happen to be fantasic. Due to forces beyond our control (namely, the disgusting spammers pushing everything from offshore casinos to viagra to nude photos of Hollywood bimbos), we have been forced to remove the Guestbook from the site, as there was no way to ensure that it wasn't being used for nefarious purposes. In the future, if you wish to leave word or get in touch with us here at the site, please feel free to email us.

January 3, 2006

Happy New Year! Sorry the site update is late, but time just got away from us. Added to that, there isn't very much to report right now. David continues to work on the music for "China" and might still be working on the FIFA project, although that's unconfirmed.

As far as website news, we have been working on a new and improved photo gallery, using a different format which should allow many more pictures than are currently displayed. In other words, we have *finally* started to sort out the magic of thumbnails, and hope to unveil the fruits of our labor next month. In the meantime, here's a (very) small sample of what we've accomplished so far:

Go ahead, click on it - you know you want to!

December 1, 2005

Starting on a serious note, a fraudulent auction was recently posted on eBay, using images and a description that had been stolen from a prior (legitimate) auction relating to one of David's guitars. In the future, if you see any memorabilia related to David and you have questions, please feel free to contact us at webmaster@davidrhodes.org for confirmation of the authenticity of the auction in question.

On to the good stuff...

David continues to work on the soundtrack for "China" (we looked it up, there are over 1,284,303,705 people in the country - that probably requires a lot of music!). In addition, it looks as if he's written the theme for the entire "Atlas" series on the Discovery Channel High Definition network! We'll keep you posted about airdates as soon as we get them.

You may have heard that Peter Gabriel will be working on the festivities surrounding the FIFA World Cup matches in Berlin next year. It looks like David may have a hand in those proceedings as well. More specifics if and when we get them.

In addition, the long-awaited Still Growing Up DVD set was finally released here in the States on November 22. Mixed with footage from the summer festival tour last summer, the final show at Kaiserslautern and a performance in Brussels from last Spring is interview footage featuring all of the members of the band. Included in the extras are three fantastic rehearsal performances done in the Big Room at Real World before the tour started in 2002. We get complete versions of Darkness, Growing Up and No Way Out - worth the price of admission alone! You can get your copy from Amazon.

Now, what are we forgetting? Oh yeah, last month we brought you our first trivia contest! For answers and to see who the lucky winner was, click here!!!

November 1, 2005

David is *still* hard at work on the soundtrack for "China", which will be part of the "Atlas" series on the Discovery Channel High Definition network. The airdate is still unknown.

Peter Gabriel's new DVD, "Live and Unwrapped", is scheduled for release in the U.K. on October 31 and in the United States on November 15. As well as performances from last summer's festival tour, the DVD will also feature interviews with members of the band. You can pre-order from Amazon.

And new in the archives, we have a 1995 interview conducted by genesis-fanclub.de. With their kind cooperation, we have this interview in English for the first time. In addition, you can hear a sound clip of David sharing a story about touring with Peter Gabriel.

September 1, 2005

As promised, this month we have more new music for you. L'Uomo Perfetto is out on DVD on September 20, and we have resurrected the interview David gave while writing the music for the film. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to hear three pieces from the soundtrack, again provided with David's kind permission.

(For those of us in the United States, Real World says the DVD will be released both in PAL and NTSC format at the same time.)

August 2, 2005
