David tells us he has had a busy month and has another one ahead. For those of you who enquired, DR did spend about a week recording with David Ferguson last month. What will become of the music is unclear as this point. Bittersweet is mastered and will be released through the Bowers and Wilkins Music Club as their selection for the month of July. InDeepAnDance is a unique music and visual arts event, conceptualized by Vittorio Cosma, Masbedo and Aldo Nove. Last year, David wrote a couple of songs for the event, this year he'll be performing at some shows in Italy, together with Richard Evans and Ged Lynch, among many others. David is also looking forward to doing some shows with Laurence Revey at some point in the summer, but as yet nothing is confirmed. And for those who enquired about DR's latest garden activities, we're told that the bees will be moving in tomorrow! For more information, keep checking David Rhodes Archive for updates.

April 1, 2009 David's returning home, having just completed Peter Gabriel's short South American tour. Soundboard recordings of the shows are available through TheMusic.com. You can see great pictures from the tour on Tony Levin's tour page. He's added films now! Definitely worth checking out. Things are getting busy - David tells us that he'll be going into the studio this month with an old friend. He may also be doing some shows supporting another vocalist. As always, we'll try to get more details and pass them along as soon as we can.

David reports that he's completed the studio work on "Bittersweet", Stephen Barber has written and recorded some beautiful string arrangments and Tchad Blake is currently working on mixing the songs. David is pleased with the results; he calls the music "very exciting." Stay tuned, and we'll be sure to let you in on release dates and other pertinent information as we get it.

In other news, David will soon start rehearsals for a small tour with Peter Gabriel. At present, it looks as if they'll he performing in Mexico and South America.

Happy New Year!

We have some very exciting news. This month, David will go into the studio to record a solo album. He's written a great bunch of songs and wrangled a group of excellent musicians to help him out, including Richard Evans, Ged Lynch, Dean Brodrick and Charlie Jones.

The album, called Bittersweet, will initially be released for download through the Bower and Wilkins Music Club. No timetable is set as of yet, but studio work begins next week. We'll be sure to keep you advised as we get new information.

In other news, David worked on Daniel Mimra's new album, which was released last month. You can hear a few of the songs on his site.

The music was recorded in a specific manner to take advantage of the IMAX sound systems, but you can certainly hear how special it is, even in stereo.

Another quiet month for David. Still some irons in the fire, and some projects that should heat up in the New Year.

For those of you have been asking for a long-overdue update on some of the information on the FAQ page, here's a small insight into how David is spending his spare time between projects, straight from the man himself:

As for how I'm spending my time, at the moment I read very slowly, The Cider House Rules [by John Irving - ed.], and a couple of books on beekeeping. If I have some spare money in the spring I may sort out a hive. Bees, would help increase the apple harvest.
I should be pressing the last of the apples for juice, over the weekend. The cider is still fermenting.
I was pointed in the direction of a band call EST. Swedish, I think. The odd bits I've heard sound remarkable. Sadly the main guy, died in a diving accident earlier this year.

There you go, straight from the man himself. Among his many other skills, perhaps he'll soon add the term "apiarist" to his always-growing resume.

InDeepAnDance is an event created by four Italian artists: a musician, a poet, and two film directors (Vittorio Cosma, Aldo Nove and the duo �Masbedo�). Described as a �multimedia opera�, it�s a combination of film and music, meant to be a blend of challenging ideas and groove music, as a complement to each other. There are thirteen movements of music and images, presented on four screens in a large structure, with the audience centered between the screens.

Richard Evans and David collaborated with Vittorio Cosma, writing two sections, �hurrying/speed� and �I am�, which David describes as melodic, powerful and emotional. David and Richard contributed vocals on these sections and David played on a couple of other sections. The show will run for four nights in Milan next month. There will be a guest soloist each night, who will play along with the tracks on one or two pieces. If the show works well, it may travel to other cities.

Not a whole lot of news at the moment. David appears on 'Big Blue Ball', the latest Real World Records release, as well as on "Down To Earth", Peter Gabriel's contribution to the 'Wall-E' soundtrack.

'Sea Monsters' is now available on DVD in the United States and Canada; you can order from National Geographic or Amazon.com.

We're thrilled (and a bit relieved) to bring you a blast from the past this month. Those of you familiar with Random Hold may remember that a very favorable newspaper write up helped pique Polydor's interest and RH's subsequent signing. That article appeared in Melody Maker in December of 1978, and you can read it in its entirety here. (Apologies in advance for the poor quality of the picture scans, there's only so much to be done with 30 year old newsprint!)

We had hoped to have a surprise for you last month, but it hasn't quite come together yet. We're still working on getting things to fall into line, and as soon as we can, we'll get word to you.

In the meantime, we do have a couple of items of interest this month.

The Discovery Channel will be airing Atlas: India Revealed in the United States this month. The Footnote (David, together with Richard Evans) wrote the musical score for the India chapter, as well as the South Africa episode (which is not yet on the television schedule).

"Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure" will be available for sale on DVD (in the U.S. and Canada only) starting June 10, 2008. No word on DVD release in Europe or Australia, nor any sign of the soundtrack CD as yet, but you can order the DVD here.

Okay, so we got a little carried away with the spirit of April Fools Day. Our apologies for any confusion we may have caused. As far as we know, there was no gathering of David Rhodes(es) at Real World (although we have compiled a list through the years of many other folks with the same name). At last count, we had well over 20 of them.

The results for our March contest are in! Our five winners are Jim DiCarli, Kerstin Baramsky, Robert Rakoczy, Dave Clark and Susanne Vogel. Congratulations, and your autographed cards will be on their way to you this week.

David has been working with Peter Gabriel on on a bit of the music meant for the new PIXAR film, called WALL-E. Not sure how much will end up in the movie, but it should be on the soundtrack. More about the film can be found here.

There's something else in the wind that isn't quite ready, but look for another ATDR update in the next week or two with what we hope will be a nice surprise.

March was a very eventful month for DR. David Rhodes, the cellist and composer, David Rhodes, the American guitarist, and David Rhodes, the lutist, happened to be traveling through Wiltshire with David Rhodes, the duck decoy designer. Unfortunately, they got hung up by a flat tyre on their tour bus. DR happened along at just the right time and after helping them get their coach sorted, invited them to Real World for an impromptu jam session. An incredibly busy (and caffeine-filled) 24 hours later, the Davids had written and recorded 10 brand new songs and carved one duck decoy inspired by the infamous Real World swan. The particulars are still being ironed out, but keep your eyes out for the release of the new Rhodes + Rhodes + Rhodes + Rhodes CD, entitled David, coming soon to a record shop near you!

Peter Gabriel (and his full band) will be performing at the World AIDS Day concert sponsored by Nelson Mandela's 46664 Foundation. The concert will be in Johannesburg on December 1, and will also feature Annie Lennox, Ludacris, Corinne Bailey Rae and the Goo Goo Dolls.


From the 46664 site:

46664 (we say four, double six, six four) was Nelson Mandela's prison number when he was imprisoned on Robben Island, off Cape Town in South Africa. He was jailed in 1964 for 27 years for leading the liberation movement against apartheid and for his impassioned stance on the rights of everyone to live in freedom. He was prisoner number 466, imprisoned in 1964. The Robben Island prisoners were never referred to by their names, but rather by their numbers and year of imprisonment - hence 46664 was Nelson Mandela's number.

This was very much the strategy of the apartheid regime, to reduce those people fighting for the right to freedom to nameless numbers.

It was for precisely this reason that Mr. Mandela decided to use this powerful, symbolic number in the fight against HIV AIDS. Through this simple, poignant means he has demonstrated and communicated to the world that people must never be reduced to simple numbers - we are human beings, all equal, and those infected and living with HIV AIDS have the same right to live and to be treated as equals.

This is how the number 46664 became the icon for promoting Nelson Mandela's global HIV AIDS awareness campaign.

National Geographic's new film, "Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure", opens in the U.S. on October 5 and in Europe and Australia on October 20. "The Footnote" (David Rhodes and Richard Evans) devised new recording methods to take advantage of the IMAX format.

After a whirlwind summer tour, David has a relatively quiet month planned for August, with just a single show scheduled on August 11.

During the short break before the WOMAD show, David rushed back into the studio with Richard Evans to work on the "Sea Monsters" theme song. Peter Gabriel collaborated in writing the theme, and Angie Pollack lent her voice (together with Peter's) to the tune. As of this writing, the film is scheduled for release in the United States on October 5, 2007, and will play in both IMAX and standard theatres.

"The Peter Gabriel Warm Up Tour Summer 2007" seems to have hit its stride. They have had successful shows throughout Germany and parts of the U.K. and, as of this writing, they're preparing to swing through Italy. In the past couple of weeks, David and Richard have completed all three soundtrack projects, including a recording session with an orchestra in Budapest to put the finishing touches on "Sea Monsters".

Rehearsals for "The Peter Gabriel Warm Up Tour Summer 2007" began in earnest on May 21, and now that Tony has joined them, the band is complete. You can check out Richard Chappell's Tour Diary for daily updates on the progress of the tour preparations and some very nice pictures of the goings on, such as these:





As of this writing, the tour comprises over 20 shows, including a rare engagement at 'The Eden Project,' where PG played during the Live 8 concerts.

As if getting ready for rehearsals and a quick summer tour wasn't enough to keep David occupied, he's currently hard at work with Richard Evans, finishing up soundtracks for two new "Atlas: Revealed" offerings for The Discovery Channel and "Sea Monsters" for National Geographic. David tells us that Richard and the orchestrator have come up with a "wild plan" to record some of the "Sea Monsters" orchestrations in a way that has never been done before, in an effort to achieve the "weight and immersive qualities" required to properly orchestrate the underwater scenes.

The Footnote will start work on a new film soundtrack in March, an IMAX release for National Geographic, called "Sea Monsters". You can see the trailer and a short film on the website for the film, due out this Autumn.

In addition, check out the Discography page. Over the past couple of months, we have been able to add quite a few projects that previously succeeded in escaping our notice.

Unfortunately, David will not appear at the "F�stival Pr�sences �lectroniques" as we reported previously.

On March 15, David will be appearing at "F�stival Pr�sences �lectroniques", a four day music festival in Paris, presented by Institut National de L'audiovisuel and Radio France. David will be part of an experimental music group which will also include Hector Zazou, Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin, Katie Jane Garside and Nils Petter Molv�r. David reports that he and Richard are still hard at work on the "Atlas" series for the Discovery Network. Most recently they have turned their attentions to "India Revealed". As soon as we have airdates for the new batch of programs, we'll be sure to pass them along.

As promised, dr.org HQ is now coming to you from the West Coast of the United States, and thanks to everyone for your well wishes.

David tells us that "The Footnote" is still hard at work on the soundtrack for "Atlas: South Africa" and it looks as if they'll begin work on "Atlas: India" at the beginning of 2007. The China and Australia editions are still showing on the Discovery Times channel - check the Atlas website for current listings.

In addition, keep an eye on eBay - there might still be a few good bits left. Keep in mind that anything listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo' is legitimate, and feel free to contact webmaster@davidrhodes.org if you have any doubts about a particular item.

The November update is slightly early this month, due to the relocation of dr.org HQ from the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast. No worries, though, we fully intend to be back on schedule for the December 1 update.

The "Atlas" series has premiered in the United States to great reviews, and can still be seen in reruns. The Discovery Channel has a fantastic website about the show, including video clips from each of the first four episodes and new material added after the shows have aired.

David has begun working with Richard Evans on the soundtrack for "Atlas: South Africa" and they may also write the music for "Atlas: India" some time early next year.

David tells us that his shed is feeling much less cluttered thanks to the wonderful response to his eBay auctions. He says he has a few good bits left, some of which may find their way to auction during November. Be sure to keep an eye out for items listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo'.

On October 1, 2006, the "Atlas" series will premiere in the United States on both the Discovery Channel and Discovery HD Theatre. David worked with Richard Evans to score the China episode (airing October 1) and the Australia episode (airing October 22). Discovery has a great website about the show, including video clips from each of the first four episodes.

In addition, David tells us that he and Richard are looking forward to beginning work on "Atlas: South Africa" next week.

David is still clearing out his shed. Keep an eye out for some very cool items on eBay in the near future, listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo'. Two Encore sets have already been auctioned, and it's likely that a few more items will appear in the near future.

On October 1, 2006, "China: Revealed," the first film in the Discovery Channel "Atlas" series, will premiere in the United States, complete with a soundtrack by "The Footnote," otherwise known as Richard Evans and David Rhodes. While he was working on the soundtrack earlier this year, David answered some questions for us about his experiences with the soundtrack process in general, and this program in particular, which you can read here.

For the collectors out there, David tells us that he's clearing out his shed once again. Keep an eye out for some very cool items on eBay in the near future, listed under the seller name 'drstufftogo'. There was a problem with a fraudulent listing not long ago, but rest assured that any listings from drstufftogo are genuine. As to what sort of items will be listed, we can't be too specific, but you're likely to see an Encore deluxe boxed set or three, as well as some one-of-a-kind items.

David and Richard, now working under the amusing name "The Footnote", completed the soundtrack for Atlas: Australia last week. It looks as if France has been delayed again, so The Footnote is taking a well-deserved break.

However, David will be doing some work on Loreena McKennit's new album - you may recall that he played on her release "Book of Secrets".

For your viewing pleasure this month, we have something a bit different. Many of you have questions about David's discography, especially many of the Japanese albums. We have a clip of Akiko Nano performing a song from her album "Ai Ga Nakucha Ne". If you look very closely, you can see Mr. Rhodes with the background players, but his guitar is clearly heard throughout the song. David tells us that he started work on Atlas: France this week. The series is tentatively scheduled to begin airing on Discovery HD in October. As soon as we have firmer air dates, we'll let you know!

This month, we have a new video for you - footage from a 1986 Talk Talk concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. David played on the Talk Talk album "The Colour of Spring" and performed with them on this tour, which resulted in their live album, "London 1986".

David and Richard are busy putting the finishing touches on the soundtrack for Atlas: Australia.

David can also be heard on Akira Inoue's latest album, "Criteria". If you understand Japanese, you can find a great deal of information on Akira's website. If your Japanese is a bit rusty, you could give AltaVista's Babel Fish a try, although the results are often more poetic than comprehensible. For those of you who like a good conundrum, check out this page, which might look familiar to those of us who have ventured into the Wiltshire countryside.

The disc is only available for sale in Japan, but you can order it online through Sony Japan. (Once again, we strongly encourage engaging the services of a skilled translator if at all possible.)

As of this writing, David is in Budapest, working with an orchestra on the Australia soundtrack. He tells us that the project is moving along very well and much more quickly than the last.

This month we have a very special treat in store. We're pleased to bring you "Breakthrough", a song from 'Head, Hands & Feet', the album David recorded with Akira Inoue. The album is very difficult to find, so we're especially happy to be able to share this tune with you. You can hear the song here. Enjoy!

From the Great Wall and pandas to the Great Barrier Reef and koalas. Yes, after months of anticipation, it looks as if David and Richard have finally completed work on "China". However, rather than moving on to "France" as we reported last month, they're working on "Australia", the third episode of the Atlas series. They still expect to score "France", the Aussies have simply moved ahead in the order.

We had such a great response to the video footage last month (and keep those notes coming in, we always love to hear from you!) that we have another clip this month. You can see video of Japan's performance of "Ghosts" from the same episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test we featured last month (March 4, 1982). All the players are a bit more visible, and David makes some very creative noises whilst seated at stage left. You can see the clip here. Enjoy!

David reports that he and Richard Evans are very excited to be completing the soundtrack to �China� this week. They'll be moving on to �France� almost immediately, and it looks likely that they will also do the music for "Australia", the third film in the series. David has answered a slew of questions for us about the process of scoring the film and writing the music, and you can look forward to seeing that information in a future update when "China" airs, which is now projected to be some time in September 2006.

We have an interesting bit of film for you this month. Thanks to the kind folks at You Tube (and the anonymous friend who tipped us off), you can see and hear a rare performance of the band Japan. We have a video of their performance of "Cantonese Boy" on The Old Grey Whistle Test, from March 4, 1982. If you look towards the right side of the screen, you'll see a gent wearing a white shirt and playing a red guitar - if you squint, you can make out our own Mr. Rhodes. Unfortunately, the picture is fuzzy, but the sound is clear and you can get an idea of the sort of music Japan played. You can see the clip here. Enjoy!

As of this writing, David is once again hard at work on the soundtrack to �China�, the first program in the Atlas series for The Discovery Channel HD. David tells us that the film has been significantly re-edited, and he and Richard Evans are creating more music to suit the new footage. They have high hopes of completing it this month and will most likely be moving on to �France�, the next chapter in the Atlas series.

As promised last month, we have finally completed the redesign of the photo gallery! We now have over 60 photos, gathered from old magazine articles and personal photos, screenshots from DVDs and videos, books and concert photos. The pictures have been taken by folks such as Larry Fast, Tony Levin and many fans throughout the years, all of whom have graciously given their permission to use their images on this site. A grateful �Thank you!� to all of them for helping us expand our offerings and present a more thorough representation of David through the years.

Happy New Year! Sorry the site update is late, but time just got away from us. Added to that, there isn't very much to report right now. David continues to work on the music for "China" and might still be working on the FIFA project, although that's unconfirmed.

As far as website news, we have been working on a new and improved photo gallery, using a different format which should allow many more pictures than are currently displayed. In other words, we have *finally* started to sort out the magic of thumbnails, and hope to unveil the fruits of our labor next month. In the meantime, here's a (very) small sample of what we've accomplished so far:

Starting on a serious note, a fraudulent auction was recently posted on eBay, using images and a description that had been stolen from a prior (legitimate) auction relating to one of David's guitars. In the future, if you see any memorabilia related to David and you have questions, please feel free to contact us at webmaster@davidrhodes.org for confirmation of the authenticity of the auction in question.

On to the good stuff...

David continues to work on the soundtrack for "China" (we looked it up, there are over 1,284,303,705 people in the country - that probably requires a lot of music!). In addition, it looks as if he's written the theme for the entire "Atlas" series on the Discovery Channel High Definition network! We'll keep you posted about airdates as soon as we get them.

You may have heard that Peter Gabriel will be working on the festivities surrounding the FIFA World Cup matches in Berlin next year. It looks like David may have a hand in those proceedings as well. More specifics if and when we get them.

In addition, the long-awaited Still Growing Up DVD set was finally released here in the States on November 22. Mixed with footage from the summer festival tour last summer, the final show at Kaiserslautern and a performance in Brussels from last Spring is interview footage featuring all of the members of the band. Included in the extras are three fantastic rehearsal performances done in the Big Room at Real World before the tour started in 2002. We get complete versions of Darkness, Growing Up and No Way Out - worth the price of admission alone! You can get your copy from Amazon.

David will be appearing with Peter Gabriel in Geneva on October 8, 2005 for a benefit concert for United Against Malaria, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations.

David is still hard at work on the soundtrack for "China", which is tentatively scheduled to air on The Discovery Channel sometime in November in the United States.

Peter Gabriel's new DVD, "Live and Unwrapped", is scheduled for release in the U.K. on October 31 and in the United States on November 15. As well as performances from last summer's festival tour, the DVD will also feature interviews with members of the band. You can pre-order from Amazon.

And new in the archives, we have a 1995 interview conducted by genesis-fanclub.de. With their kind cooperation, we have this interview in English for the first time. In addition, you can hear a sound clip of David sharing a story about touring with Peter Gabriel.

As promised, this month we have more new music for you. L'Uomo Perfetto is out on DVD on September 20, and we have resurrected the interview David gave while writing the music for the film. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to hear three pieces from the soundtrack, again provided with David's kind permission.

(For those of us in the United States, Real World says the DVD will be released both in PAL and NTSC format at the same time.)

David will be joining Robert Plant for some television appearances in Europe and the States promoting Mr. Plant's new album, "The Mighty Rearranger" which comes out May 2 in the U.K. and May 10 in the U.S. You can see them May 9 on The Late Show with David Letterman and May 14 on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. They will also be taping a segment for Sessions@AOL.

"L'Uomo Perfetto" has been moved back and will premiere on April 27 in Rome and open on April 29.� Plans for a soundtrack release are up in the air, but if there's anything to report - we'll report it!

"L'Uomo Perfetto" is set to premiere on April 15 in Rome.� The soundtrack should go on sale soon after (we'll have more details for you as they become available). David was kind enough to answer questions about the soundtrack which you can read here.

David has completed the soundtrack for 'L'Uomo Perfetto.'� The film will premiere in Rome on April 15 and the soundtrack features work by John Giblin and Ged Lynch, as well as string arrangements by Richard Evans.

A soundtrack album release is expected - more details as they fall into place.

Summer 2004
David just completed two years working on the "Still Growing Up Tour" with Peter Gabriel. For more information on the tour, and great pictures of what David and the band have been up to, check out Tony Levin's tour diary, which includes photos and descriptions starting with the band's first shows in 2002 and continuing through to their last show July 25 in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

David recently�worked�with his frequent collaborator, Akira Inoue, on a song for the Special Olympics Foundation in Japan. The Foundation has financed a documentary called 'Host Town', which is about last year's Special Olympics held in Ireland. Akira has made the soundtrack, and the song should be part of the film, or if not on the soundtrack album. The soundtrack was released on May 25, 2004 and can be purchased here.
